Welcome To The Sunflower Society

The Sunflower Society Women’s Community Center

A safe space to share experiences and seek guidance

What is a support network? A support network describes “your team” – women that you can turn to for encouragement, support and personal growth. Having a good support network is a vital tool in maintaining your health and well-being especially when you’re living with a chronic illness or life-threatening disease.

When women come together in supportive communities, they don’t just share experiences; they build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Whether it’s sharing personal stories, offering advice, or simply listening, these interactions help everyone thrive.

From workshops and health literacy classes to art as therapy and therapeutic gardening – The Sunflower Society Women’s Community Center is a place where chronically ill women will find deeper community and connection along with personal empowerment; a community that you can partake in as frequently as you like, whether it’s every day, twice a week, or once a month.

Thriving Together: The Women We Serve

Who is she, the chronically ill woman? More than likely you know her already. She is a mother, she is a sister, she is a grandmother. She is a co-worker, a neighbor, an aunt, a cousin. She is a wife, she is a friend. Perhaps she Is you?

Chronic illness does not discriminate; it can affect any woman regardless of her age, geography, income, social status, race, ethnicity, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, or other aspect of cultural identity.

When women come together in support of one another, they create a ripple effect that strengthens entire communities. By fostering a culture of kindness, empathy, and encouragement, we can help each other navigate the challenges of chronic illness and celebrate the beauty of shared experiences.

Throughout your journey, The Sunflower Society can be your source for inspiration, advice, and a little peace of mind. We want to help you live your best life possible:

  • Support — Opportunities for connection, camaraderie, and community.
  • Education — Empowering women with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to live well.
  • Resources — Increasing access to helpful and relevant information regarding women’s health.
  • Advocacy — Expanded reach through a unified mission and voice with like-minded organizations.

Because Being Seen, Heard, and Understood Isn’t Just Comforting, It’s Life-Changing

Peer support is more than conversation; it’s a quiet revolution. It reminds us that healing doesn’t always come from clinical breakthroughs or big “aha” moments. Sometimes, the most profound healing unfolds in simple, human exchanges: a story shared, a moment of pain witnessed, or the presence of someone who simply says: “I get it.”

There’s a unique kind of comfort in knowing you’re not alone. When someone says, “I’ve been there,” it cuts through the isolation. You don’t have to explain every detail or justify how hard things have been. You just show up as you are, and that’s enough.

In peer support spaces, there’s an unspoken promise: this is a place where your truth is welcome. There’s no pressure to have it all together. No stigma. Just presence.

Healing isn’t a destination. It’s an ongoing journey. There’s something sacred about being with others who truly see you – not despite your pain, but because of it. In those moments, we’re reminded that we don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of love and connection. We just have to be honest. We just have to be willing to show up.

A Year Of Impact Made Possible By You

Thank you for making a difference!

In 2025 with the help of our awesome volunteers, generous donors and community partners we were able to provide: 115 fleece blankets to women undergoing chemotherapy at a local infusion center in partnership with our Hugs Through Blankets program. Ten hospitalized women in need received care packages with a pair of warm, fuzzy socks, snacks, an adult coloring book and colored pencils. Six women were helped with career counseling and we connected thirty-six women with needed community resources.

To make our work possible, we rely on the generosity of our community. Your gift helps women in Marion County, a friend, a neighbor, a family member, or co-worker — who is struggling with a life-threatening or chronic disease.

Get Involved – Give Hope! Self Care Isn’t Nice To Have It’s A Must Have

So, what exactly counts as self-care? It is any act of looking out for your own physical, mental or emotional well-being. Self-care requires checking in on how you are doing daily. It is more than bubble baths, expensive beauty treatments or vacations and anyone, even with limited money and time, can practice.

We believe that a woman is the most important member of her healthcare team, and we’re here to empower you with the knowledge and tools you need to take an active role in your health care, through programs and resources that support self-care, self-management, and self-advocacy, that equates to better health outcomes and overall well-being.

Women Helping Women

A Community For Peer Support

The Sunflower Society is a peer-support organization for women diagnosed with Cancer, Lupus, PTSD, MS, CKD, Chronic Liver Disease, Heart Disease, Chron’s, Fibromyalgia, COPD, HIV, Diabetes, Depression, and the multitude of other life-threatening and chronic diseases that affect more than 38 million women in the U.S.

The concept of women helping women is at the heart of The Sunflower Society, where collaboration and mutual support drive collective success. In our support network, women come together to share their lived experiences, offer guidance, and provide encouragement, creating a powerful support system. This collaborative approach not only fosters individual growth but also strengthens the entire network.

Chronically ill women need peer support. It reduces loneliness, increases self-worth, and fosters social solidarity, acceptance, and understanding. It also fights discrimination and fortifies emotional resilience.

Let us champion the cause of women’s health, recognizing it as the cornerstone of resilient and thriving communities. Only through the collective efforts of all community members can we unlock the full potential of our community and pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future for women living with life-threatening and chronic diseases. Everyone has a role to play: providers, health plans, clinical leaders, policymakers, employers, investors, and community members.

You Can Make A Difference

Your Gift Will Change The Life Of A Chronically Ill Mom Like Me

In an ideal world charities wouldn’t need to exist. Imagine a society where homelessness didn’t exist, where children were never hungry, where all chronic diseases could be cured, and where everyone was treated with the same opportunities in life. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way, and our Government isn’t outfitted to serve everyone who needs a helping hand.

That’s why The Sunflower Society exists, to fill the gaps, weaving a network of support that catches women when they fall and lifts them up to reach their full potential of well-being.

Empowering women to take charge of their health is at the heart of The Sunflower Society. When women have the tools to assert their strengths, families and communities also thrive.

In our fast-paced and often isolating world, having a strong, healthy community is like having a lifeline – especially for moms like me. Get involved. Give hope.
